CASE STUDY

RELOCATION OF NC-119 HIGHWAY CORRIDOR

Thalle Construction served as the prime contractor for the major relocation of NC-119, a multi-year roadway and bridge initiative designed to improve mobility, safety, and long-term transportation capacity in Alamance County. Spanning from I-40/85 to SR-1921, the project required the full reconstruction and realignment of the NC-119 corridor to better serve the growing Mebane region and to reduce congestion at one of the Piedmont’s busiest interstate interchanges. Work began in 2017 and continued through 2023, delivering one of the area’s most significant transportation upgrades in decades.

Thalle’s scope included large-scale grading, excavation, and complex drainage installation, followed by a full suite of pavement systems that incorporated asphalt concrete, cement concrete pavement, concrete shoulders, a sand-asphalt surface course, permeable asphalt drainage layers, and open-graded asphalt friction courses. Each pavement component was selected to optimize durability, stormwater performance, and ride quality across varying traffic loads and environmental conditions. The project also included extensive signal installation, reforestation, and roadway safety improvements along the new alignment.

Bridge and structural work played a key role in the relocation effort. Thalle constructed reinforced concrete deck slab structures supported by deep drilled piers, ensuring long-term stability and resilience for all crossings within the corridor. The team’s integration of bridge construction, roadway realignment, drainage networks, and reforestation required tight coordination with state agencies, local stakeholders, and utility partners throughout the multi-year construction timeline.
