Butcher Creek Sanitary Landfill Boydton, Virginia
In 2007, due to a Virginia State directive to close an existing landfill, the Southside Regional Public Service Authority needed to “fast track” this project. Thalle’s scope of work included 1 10-acre cell, leachate collection and storage facility, tank load-out facility, site-access roads, paved entrance road, scale house/office, concrete deck scales, pre-engineered steel equipment building and sediment and erosion control measures. It was just the kind of multi-faceted and time sensitive project upon which Thalle prides itself. Thalle mobilized immediately, launching the excavation as soon as the company received the Notice to Proceed. The cell construction included over 300,000 cubic yards of earth and rock excavation, 35,000 cubic yards of bentonite amended soil liner, 900,000 sq. ft. of geosynthetic liners and 30,000 tons of stone drainage cover in addition to the complete leachate system. Thalle also used its Rapid-Mix 400 pugmill plant, mixing over 1,900 tons of bentontite. The cell was completed one week ahead of schedule. Contract value was approximately $5,000,000.

Tuscarora Landfill Closure New Bern, North Carolina
Thalle Construction was contracted by the Coastal Regional Solid Waste Management Authority (CRSWMA) to perform a partial closure at the Tuscarora Regional Landfill. The closure included 25 acres of stripping and sub-grade preparation, import of approximately 120,000 cubic yards of material for subgrade and protective cover, over 3,659,000 square feet of geosynthetic liners, erosion control and site restoration. Also included in the contract was work on the gas extraction system. Thalle repaired the existing passive system and installed a new active system consisting of 23 gas extraction wells, over 5,800 feet of HDPE gas collection laterals and a pre-processing station. This work was part of CRSWMA’s installation of a new gas recovery and gas to electric power conversion plant.

Buncombe County C & D Landfill, Phase IV Expansion Asheville, North Carolina
For Buncombe County General Services, Thalle Construction performed the fast track construction of Cell 6 at the Buncombe County Landfill. This new 24.5 acre facility was constructed complete with a composite liner system, leachate collection and removal system, storm water diversion system, groundwater monitoring system and bioreactor monitoring instrumentation. The project scope also included storm management structures, extension of the perimeter access road, extension of gas and leachate injection piping, removal of sediment in Pond 3, and paving of a segment of the existing stone road.
This project presented a major challenge in that the initial 6.5 acres had to be completed within 120 days to provide additional capacity as quickly as possible. Thalle was able to complete this work well ahead of schedule allowing the County to obtain the necessary permits from the State within the 4 month window.

North Wake and Feltonsville Landfill Closures Wake County, North Carolina
Thalle performed the closures of the North Wake Landfill and the Feltonsville Landfill. At completion, Thalle had closed 44 acres of landfill property for Wake County. The projects called for the installation of a final cover system which included a 40 mil LLDPE liner, a geo-composite drainage layer, an 18-inch protective layer of soil, and a 6 inch topsoil layer. Thalle also stripped the existing unsuitable soils and vegetation, prepared the sub-grade and installed HDPE storm drains and drainage swales. The Feltonsville Landfill required the use of bentonite amended soil for the liner system.
