The City of Canton and Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority (CCMWA) contracted Thalle to construct a new roller-compacted cement (RCC) dam on the Hickory Log Creek. It was completed in December 2007, on time and within budget, despite a demanding schedule and completion date. The dam is 950 feet wide and 180 feet high making it one of the largest dams in the state of Georgia not built by the Corps of Engineers or Georgia Power. It is the highest RCC dam in North America. The reservoir behind the dam will hold 5 billion gallons of water and will provide an additional source of drinking water for the area.
This new concrete gravity dam consists of 235,000 cubic yards of roller compacted concrete and over 12,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete. All concrete for the project was mixed on site and transported to the dam site via a 1500 foot conveyor system. In addition to the placement of RCC, other challenging aspects of the project included extensive rock excavation and removal, foundation grouting, instrumentation, hydraulic crest gates, sluice gates and access roads. A great deal of time was spent throughout the entire project on safety measures to support the workforce. The project team creatively designed a work platform on the top of the dam to construct the spillway. The solution eliminated potential fall hazard and allowed work to be performed in an efficient manner. Additional appurtenant items included a control building; large diameter welded steel pipe; electrical instrumentation and a 252 foot long pedestrian bridge.
